Named. Known. A specimen with a story attached to it.
This is Willana — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, and named in the tradition of the great botanical collectors who understood that naming a thing is the beginning of knowing it. Not every specimen gets a name. This one earned one.
Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.
Pressed and presented against white, the full character of the specimen is visible. The structure. The colour. The particular way it holds itself — as if it knows it has been seen properly, finally, and is content to be still.
For those who believe that everything worth finding deserves a name.
Fits beautifully in a study, a library, or anywhere that honours the art of paying attention.
