This is The Torn One — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, where the southern sea doesn't always deliver things whole. This specimen arrived already broken — torn by the surge, by the rocks, by whatever it encountered on its way to the shore. And yet.

Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.

There is something in the torn edge that a perfect specimen doesn't have. A history. Evidence of what it survived. The tear is not a flaw — it is the record of a life lived in moving water, in surge and swell, in the full force of the southern sea. It is, in its way, a scar. And scars are interesting.

For those who know that the broken things are often the most honest ones.
