The Handle

An old generator door handle. A brass knob at its end, worn by decades of use. And along its length — tiny pāua shells, arranged by hand.

This handle came from another era. The kind of hardware built to last, to be gripped by working hands in all weathers, to open and close something that mattered. The brass knob at its end has the particular warmth of aged metal — gold deepening to amber, polished smooth by time and touch.

The pāua shells came from the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura. Each one placed deliberately along the handle — tiny, iridescent, impossibly delicate against the weight and age of the iron. Blues and greens and purples catching the light where rust and brass once had it all to themselves.

This is the conversation the artist is having with the island. Taking what industry left behind and what the sea offers up, and bringing them together into something neither could be alone. The old and the alive. The made and the found. The heavy and the luminous.

A piece that rewards looking from a distance and looking up close. From far away, a study in texture and form. Up close, a world of tiny jewels on aged iron.
