The Māngō Ururoa — the great white shark — moves through dark water with purpose. Built for the hunt. Marked by the sea. Feared, respected, and revered in te ao Māori as a taniwha — a powerful guardian of the deep.

This design was born from a real great white shark tooth. Not fossilised. Not replicated. A tooth from a shark hunted decades before 1 April 2007, when māngō ururoa became absolutely protected in New Zealand waters. It is a piece of living history from an era when hunters and the ocean met on different terms — serrated edges worn by years, honed by salt, pressure, and the passage of time.

This tooth was a gift from a local Rakiura Māori — a generous act of sharing from someone deeply connected to this island and its waters. It is held with care and gratitude.

On the back of this hoodie, where the dorsal fin would rise, the tooth sits. EASTERLY engraved into its root. Not placed there — returned there.

The front is pure shark skin — dark charcoal bleeding into bone white, organic and uneven, the way the ocean makes things. māngō ururoa rests quietly on the chest. No translation. No explanation. Those who know, know.
