Blue. Purple. Drifting. Dangerous. Magnificent.
This is the Portuguese Man o' War — Physalia physalis — one of the ocean's most extraordinary and misunderstood creatures. Not a jellyfish, despite appearances, but a siphonophore — a colonial organism made up of thousands of individual animals working together as one. Each one incapable of surviving alone. Together, something that has no equal in the sea.
The gas-filled float — the pneumatophore — sits at the surface, iridescent blue shading into deep purple, catching the wind like a sail. It is from this that the creature takes its name: the Portuguese Man o' War, the warship of the open ocean, going wherever the wind and current take it.
This one came in on a big East roll at Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island/Rakiura — the East swell doing what it always does, bringing the open ocean to the shore. A Man o' War on the beach is always a moment. Beautiful and untouchable. A visitor from deep water, carried all the way to the foreshore by the same direction that brings first light.
Presented as though still floating — the blue and purple of the float luminous, the tentacles trailing — this piece brings the open ocean into your space. Wild, electric, and unlike anything else on your walls.
Fits beautifully in a living room, a study, or anywhere that welcomes something genuinely wild.
