Luminous

Translucent. Glowing. As if the light is coming from inside it.

This is Luminous — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, where the southern sea occasionally delivers specimens of such extraordinary quality that the only word for them is exactly this one. Held up to the light, the fronds glow. Not metaphorically. The tissue is thin enough, the pigment distributed in just the right way, that light passes through it and is transformed.

Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.

Pressed and presented against white, the luminosity is held. The way the colour shifts from the edges to the centre. The way the structure of the frond becomes visible through the tissue. The way it seems, even flat and still, to be catching light from somewhere.

Some things are simply radiant. This is one of them.
