Ligulata

This is Ligulata — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, where the southern sea grows its most expressive specimens. The name comes from the Latin for tongue or strap — and the form delivers exactly that: broad, flat fronds that ribbon and curve with a fluidity that seems almost impossible for something that grew in cold water on a rocky shore.

Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.

Pressed and presented against white, the movement is held still. The curves. The overlaps. The way the fronds fall across each other with the particular grace of something that spent its whole life in motion.
