Jenny's Pot

An old pot. Found at Jenny's Bay, Port Pegasus, Stewart Island. Algae spreading across its surface. And pāua shells — arranged by hand, placed with intention.

Port Pegasus is one of the most sheltered and storied harbours in the southern ocean — a place where boats have anchored, people have worked, and objects have been left behind to be found by whoever comes next. This pot is one of those objects. Its origins are unknown. Its history, unrecorded. But what the artist saw in it was immediate.

The algae had already done its work — colonising every surface, tracing the contours of the metal in deep greens and browns. The pāua shells came next, placed by hand into the hollows and curves of the pot, their iridescent edges catching the light. Blues and purples against the rust and green. Each shell chosen. Each one positioned.

This is where found object and artist meet. The island offered the pot, the sea offered the algae, the shore offered the pāua — and the artist brought them together into something that is entirely of this place and entirely intentional.

The sea completes things. And sometimes, so does the person paying attention.
