This is Green Velvet — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, where the southern sea produces some of its most richly coloured specimens in the surge zones and rock pools of the foreshore. The texture is the thing: dense, close-packed fronds that catch the light with a depth that genuinely resembles fabric. Not metaphorically. Actually.

Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.

Pressed and presented against white, the colour holds. That particular deep, saturated green that belongs to cold, clean, southern water. The kind of green that makes you understand why people fall in love with this coastline.
