Delicate. Intricate. Blue-green, like nothing you've seen washed up before.

This is the spine of a Green Bone — Odax pullus — a fish native to New Zealand waters whose skeleton carries a distinctive blue-green hue, caused by high iodine content unique to the species. Found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, weathered by the sea, shaped by time, and revealed by the tide.

Most people walk past things like this. They're looking for the obvious treasures — the shells, the stones, the driftwood. But the shoreline rewards patience. It rewards the kind of looking that slows down, leans in, and notices what's quietly extraordinary.

The structure of this skeleton is remarkable — each vertebra articulated, the whole form graceful and precise. Nature's own engineering, laid bare. There is a particular beauty in things stripped back to their essential form. Nothing decorative. Nothing unnecessary. Just structure, and the colour the sea gave it.

A piece for those who find wonder in the unexpected. Who know that the most interesting things are rarely the most obvious ones.

Fits beautifully in a study, a hallway, or anywhere that rewards a second look.
