A lady's bobby pin. And arranged upon it, a tiny cluster of pāua shells — each one placed by hand, each one chosen.
This is where the shore and the artist meet. The bobby pin was found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura — a small, personal thing, out of place and full of quiet mystery. The pāua shells came from these same southern waters, each one a miniature world of iridescent colour: blues, greens, purples shifting with the light.
The arrangement is the artist's own. Patient. Deliberate. A conversation between what the island offered and what the eye saw in it. The hairpin as a stage. The pāua as jewels. The whole composition no bigger than a hand — and yet, somehow, monumental.
This is what it means to make art from a place. Not to impose something upon it, but to listen to what it's already saying — and then add just enough of yourself to make it sing.
Bobby Pin is intimate, unexpected, and entirely of this island.
Fits beautifully on a dressing table wall, in a bedroom, or anywhere that welcomes something quietly extraordinary.
