This is Australis — found on the shores of Stewart Island/Rakiura, at the southern edge of New Zealand where the sea grows its most characterful specimens. Pressed and presented against white, the full form of the plant is visible: the structure, the weight, the particular way it holds itself even out of the water.

Washed up by the Easterly — driven in on the swell that tests every mooring at Halfmoon Bay, that carves the foreshore, that shakes the foundations and then, when it's done, leaves the most extraordinary things behind on the sand.

There is something in the name. Australis. Southern. Of the south. This is a plant that belongs to these latitudes, to these waters, to this particular quality of cold, clear, southern light. It could not have come from anywhere else.
