The selkie of Celtic legend are seal-folk — creatures that move between the ocean and the land, belonging fully to neither, at home in both. At Stewart Island/Rakiura, the kēkeno — the New Zealand fur seal — carries that same quality. Wild and watchful. Utterly at ease in the southern sea, and equally present on the rocks above it. A creature of thresholds.

This piece was made at one of those thresholds — the place where the ocean meets the land at the edge of the world, where the boundary between wild and human is thinner than almost anywhere else on Earth. Where you can sit very still and feel, briefly, that you are part of something much older and larger than yourself.
