A single feather. Resting on green seaweed. Soft, intricate, impossibly rare.
This is a kākāpō feather — Strigops habroptilus — the rarest parrot on Earth. Flightless. Nocturnal. Critically endangered. Fewer than 250 exist in the world. Most people will never see one in their lifetime.
This feather was gifted through kaitiakitanga — guardianship — by local Māori ahi kā of Stewart Island/Rakiura. No birds were harmed. This is an act of respect, of relationship, of deep care for a taonga species that has survived against extraordinary odds on one of the most remote islands in the world.
Placed on seaweed gathered from Stewart Island waters, the composition is entirely natural — two elements of this place, brought together. The feather's soft olive and gold tones against the deep green of the sea. Earthbound, in every sense.
To own this piece is to hold a connection to something genuinely rare. To the island. To the bird. To the people who protect it. To the particular kind of beauty that only exists at the edge of the world.
Fits beautifully in a study, a living room, or anywhere that honours the natural world.
